National Guardian - Freedom to speak up

Local Solicitors to Offer Free Will-Writing in Support of Weston Hospicecare

Local solicitors are once again donating their time and expertise to support Weston Hospicecare by offering free will-writing appointments in exchange for a suggested donation to the charity.

The annual ‘Make Your Will Week’ returns from Monday 2 March to Friday 6 March, giving local people the opportunity to write or update their will while supporting compassionate end-of-life care in the community.

This year, eight solicitors are taking part across thirteen locations, generously giving their time to help people put their affairs in order and gain peace of mind for the future.

The initiative also comes as Weston Hospicecare joins more than 125 hospices across England, Scotland and Wales for the national This Is Hospice Care campaign. Now in its second year, the campaign highlights the extraordinary impact that gifts in wills have on hospice services and the vital role they play in funding compassionate care for local families.

Abi Smart, Legacy and Philanthropy Fundraiser at Weston Hospicecare, said: “Make Your Will Week is a wonderful example of our community coming together to support local hospice care. We’re incredibly grateful to the solicitors who give their time so generously, and to everyone who chooses to take part.

“Gifts in wills are a vital source of funding for Weston Hospicecare. They once paid for the care of one in four of our patients. Today, that figure has fallen to one in  nine. As costs rise and demand for our services grows, legacy gifts are more important than ever in helping us continue to provide compassionate care to local families when they need it most.

“By being part of the This Is Hospice Care campaign, we’re proud to stand alongside hospices across the country to shine a light on how powerful a gift in a will can be. Even a small percentage of an estate can make a lasting difference to hospice care in our community.”

Last year, Make Your Will Week raised £21,705 for Weston Hospicecare.

Long-standing supporter of the scheme, Bennetts Solicitors, said: “Bennetts has proudly supported, and will continue to support, Make Your Will Week. It is a highly regarded initiative that aligns closely with our values and our commitment to the community. Making a will is important, as it provides clarity, control and peace of mind for you and your loved ones.”

Local people are being asked to book appointments directly with participating solicitors, with many branches already fully booked. Remaining availability includes:

• Barrington & Sons, Burnham-on-Sea
