National Guardian - Freedom to speak up

John O’Groats to Land’s End – Two friends. 1000 miles. One unforgettable challenge

August 20, 2025
Laura Potter
2 Bikes, 2 Mates, 1000 Miles, 12 Days.

Since Darran and Simon we’re children, they have dreamed of cycling the length of Britain – from the wilds of John O’Groats to the tip of Land’s End.

Now, they’re finally taking on this epic adventure, over 1,000 miles of hills, headwinds, and (hopefully) a few breath-taking views – all powered by pedal and pure determination.

They’re not just doing this for the challenge (though it’s a big one!) – they are riding to raise money for Weston Hospicecare, a charity that’s close to their hearts and does incredible work supporting people and families when they need it most. Darran said “I have seen fantastic work through the eyes of being a local Paramedic, as a friend of a patient’s and as an employee of the Hospice itself. Every mile we ride and every ache in the saddle will be worth it if we can help them continue their amazing care.”

This challenge marks the final chapter in Darran’s very own ‘Cornetto Trilogy’ of challenges – after swimming the English Channel and running the London Marathon, he is swapping sea legs and running shoes for a bike seat.
