Mendip Challenge 2024: Community in Motion

April 30, 2024
Lauren Easterbrook

We are thrilled to announce the return of our biggest annual fundraiser, the Mendip Challenge taking place on Sunday 2nd June 2024. Since 1991, thousands of people have completed the yearly event, as they take on the 30-mile 20-mile, 10-mile and 5-mile routes across the West Mendip Way to raise funds for our hospice.

Last year, an impressive £76,682 was raised for the Weston Hospicecare, which we used to support the hospice to continue to deliver care to our patients and their families.

The Mendip Challenge event draws participants, many with very personal motivations for completing the challenge and raising funds. Whether that be to give back to the hospice that provided palliative end-of-life care for a loved one, or to continue a yearly tradition.

Local community member Candace Riley is taking part in the challenge this year to raise funds to give back to the charity that provided end-of-life care for her mum Machell Riley. Candace is pulling together a team from @Worle Community Centre to complete all levels of the challenge and ahead of the event is encouraging as many to get involved as possible.

Commenting on the upcoming Mendip Challenge community event, Candace Riley said “It warms my heart each year to see so many community members come together to recognise the amazing service our local hospice provides for our loved ones. Until you have a loved one in the Hospice you understand what special people it takes to manage, support and care for our loved ones.

“Weston Hospicecare is a special place for so many of us and we’re excited to gather together once again as we make our way along the West Mendip Way and aim to raise even more funds than last year!” it was my first year completing the walk with the 5 miles but I am tackling the 30 miles this year for more of a challenge with my son and a his girlfriend. @Worle keeps supporting Weston Hospice with any Challenge or event they create. A Hospice should never have to raise money to continue to do all the work they do to impact families lives in the way they do. So until the day they don’t need to raise money we will always be involved in events to raise the money needed.

Our Events and Challenges Manager Nicola Slark said: “We’re extremely excited to announce the return of our most popular event, the Mendip Challenge, taking place this summer. It’s amazing to see how many sign-ups we have received so far, and it’s truly heartwarming to understand the individual stories that have motivated so many to participate.

“We are encouraging as many as possible to take part in this annual event or support their friends and family through sponsorship, to ensure others can receive the continued level of care that Weston Hospicecare provides. We cannot wait to see everyone as they take on the challenge across the beautiful local countryside in June”.

All event participants will receive a medal, a reusable water bottle, coach travel to the start line as well as a route guide to help them complete the challenge and marshalls out on the course
