National Guardian - Freedom to speak up

Home is Where the Hub is: Join Our Friendly Team Behind the Scenes

February 2, 2018
Lauren Easterbrook

You might not be aware of our Hub, but it really is the center of our retail operation. Located in Oldmixon, Weston-super-Mare, the Hub is where we receive all clothing, toys, and bric-a-brac that are donated to our stores. From there, the items are sorted before being transferred out to the shops, ready to be sold. The Hub is also where we manage our Ebay and other online selling sites; sorting and photographing the items to be sold, and uploading the information and pictures to the relevant platforms.

The Hub is currently looking to expand its team of volunteers and you know how we often say there’s something for everyone? Well at the Hub, there really is! We’re looking for volunteers to assist in the Hub office; answering calls, booking vans for collections, and other general office duties. This role would particularly suit someone with office/ admin experience, or even those looking to learn some new skills ahead of finding paid employment.

Then there’s our vans; being a Driver’s Mate is a great way to get out and about and meet new people. You don’t even need to have any experience- you just need to be able to life heavy objects! Then there’s roles in the Hub warehouse; sorting clothes or bric-a-brac. Full training is given in this role, and not only do you pick up new skills and give something back, you also get to become part of a very friendly team.

Hub manager, Sarah, says the Hub offers the perfect environment for those wishing to make new friends and expand their skill set: “There’s a real team atmosphere here,” she says. “Everyone is really friendly and helpful, and we’re always supportive of new volunteers, because we’ve all been in the same situation. We love meeting new people, and we have such a good laugh!”

Another volunteering role we have on offer, is an Ebay Assistant. Situated at the Hub, the Ebay Team raise funds for the hospice by listing items on Ebay, Amazon, and other selling platforms for us. You must be comfortable using computers and the internet, but no specific experience is necessary as full training is given. If you’re interested in any of the above roles, please contact Weston Hospicecare on 01934 423975, or check out our volunteering page on the website.
