Cycle for a Cause: Wedmore 40/30 Returns This September to Support Local Charities

July 29, 2024
Lauren Easterbrook

This September marks the return of the Wedmore 40/30, an exhilarating cycling event organised in support of Weston Hospicecare and St Mary’s Church Wedmore.

Cycling enthusiasts from all over are invited to participate in the local challenge, which offers breathtaking routes of 30, 40, or 70 miles through the stunning landscapes of the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels. There is also a family route of 12 miles for those looking to make the challenge a day out for all!

The exciting event, now in its seventh year, is known for its scenic routes, great atmosphere and the ever popular refuel station with a spread of food provided by Somerset Larder as well as bike maintenance from Grand Tor Cycles.

Venetia, formerly a Weston Hospicecare Nurse and a previous participant in the Wedmore 40/30 now assists her husband David (one of the long-standing organisers of the event since it’s inception) by volunteering at the event and explained: “I’ve taken part in the annual Wedmore 40/30 event in some way since year one, whether as a challenger or as a volunteer. Having been part of the hospice family and seeing first-hand the incredible work they do and the impact it has across the community – I encourage as many of you as possible to get involved and if you’re not cyclist there are plenty of volunteering opportunities also available too.”

This year’s event, sponsored by Somerlap and Blue Bird Cafe promises to be as fun as ever, with routes designed to challenge riders as well as showcase the picturesque surroundings of local landmarks such as Cheddar Gorge and Chew Valley Lake.

Weston Hospicecare’s Events and Challenges Manager Nicola Slark said: We’re so excited to be collaborating with the Wedmore team once again to put on this amazing fundraising event. We’re extremely grateful to be supported by a team of volunteers like Venetia and organisers like David who dedicate their time to putting on the event.

“We encourage the local community to support our cyclists as they take on the challenge to raise funds for a great cause. Fundraising is at the heart of what we do, enabling us to continue delivering palliative care for our patients and families.”

Whether a seasoned cyclist or novice biker looking for a new a challenge, every participant will make a difference and anyone looking to take part can now register here.
