“St. Paul’s looks beautiful, lit up with all the dedication lanterns for Light Up a Life. This very special evening of carols and remembrance offers families a unique way to remember the life of a loved one and to join with hundreds of others who want to share a special message for someone they love. Christmas can be a very difficult time for those who are bereaved, but Light Up a Life helps them keep the person close at this special time of year.”
– Karen Murphy, Chaplain at Weston Hospicecare
This year, many people will be spending Christmas missing a loved one. Their absence will be keenly felt, whether the death was recent or several years ago.
Taking part in our annual Light Up a Life appeal is a very special way to remember the life of someone close to you at Christmas whilst helping to provide care for another family facing the most difficult of times right now.
There are three ways that you can join our Light Up a Life appeal this Christmas:
Light a lantern for your loved one
On Monday 11th December, we will hold our Light Up a Life evening at St Paul’s Church on Walliscote Road in Weston-super-Mare. At its heart is a moving remembrance ceremony, where we share moments of reflection in the company of other local families who have been through a similar experience. Music and readings create a quiet time in the light of an array of coloured lanterns, each one representing a loved and much-missed special person.
We invite you to dedicate a lantern to your loved one by writing your own personal message on a tag (which can be obtained by contacting Supporter Care on 01934 423 900 or by email). The tag will then be tied onto a lantern and displayed in the church. Every donation, big or small, to light a lantern goes a long way to ensuring the hospice can continue to care for local families who need us.
During the service, our chaplain, nurses and volunteers will read out the names of those who have died. Relatives and friends are warmly welcome to come forward and light a candle as the name of their loved one is read out. The lanterns will be brought back to the hospice, and your personalised messages will hang on our Christmas tree throughout Christmas. You are very welcome to collect your message from the hospice, if you prefer.
Write a dedication in the Book of Remembrance
A special Light Up a Life Book of Remembrance, which will carry personal dedications from friends and relatives, will be displayed in the hospice chapel. You are welcome to visit the hospice between 16th November and 4th January to view your dedication.
Make a donation to help us be there for our patients and families this Christmas
We believe passionately that hospice care should be there, free of charge, for whoever needs us, whenever they need us. In the darkest times, we offer compassion and companionship. Please give a donation to this year’s Light Up a Life appeal so that we can be there whenever another local family needs us.
